A renovation of a 1927 former garage structure, the 1025 South State Street project has extended the renaissance of Lockport’s downtown further along State Street as the home of a Tangled Roots Brewing Company brewpub, The Lock & Mule. At the Lock & Mule, we wanted to emphasize the history of the city of Lockport and its role as the headquarters of the I&M Canal. Lock 1 starts in Lockport and ends with Lock 15 in LaSalle. Historically, mules were used to pull barges down the canal, bringing cargo and people to and from Chicago and beyond- all through our small but mighty Lockport!
In the restaurant, you can see these historical elements incorporated into our interior design. The building itself has historical significance as well: the original open bow-trusses have been restored and span the width of the restaurant, and large roll-up garage doors are reminiscent of the building’s auto shop and showroom days.
