The two buildings on Columbus Street in Ottawa had seen better days when we purchased the building for adaptive reuse as residential units. Originally a stone mason’s workshop, these buildings have been the location of many businesses in their 100+ year histories. Now, we plan on adding to downtown Ottawa’s upscale living options with the addition of five apartments. We are taking a subtractive approach and removing a portion of the one-story building to create an interior open-air courtyard to bring life and views to the dwellings in the adjacent two-story building and the remaining dwelling in the one-story building. This is one case where “less is [definitely] more.”
