Built in 1915, the luxurious Kaskaskia Hotel was the pride and central gathering place for the burgeoning cities of LaSalle and Peru, topped with its penthouse “Manufacturer’s Club”. Like many midwestern small-town centers, much of LaSalle’s heavy industry moved out of the country and its downtown retail and hotels moved to the highways. Many of these old buildings still remain, underutilized or vacant. Now there’s a new circle of life occurring within the built environment. People are looking for authentic places and experiences. These can best be found in America’s small city downtowns. We’re grateful that the Kaskaskia Hotel buildings are still intact. While determining the best future for the property, we’ve begun preservation activities including roofing, rebuilding and tuckpointing the buildings’ beautiful masonry, and removing years of dated remodeling. Now we’re exploring the adaptive reuse of this 6-Story Hotel Tower, attached 3-story Apartment Building, and high-ceilinged and clear-span, 2-Story Garage as 60-70 Dwellings in an upscale, high-amenity community. Retail and other public spaces will reopen to the public and restore key vitality to LaSalle’s downtown.
